The second annual Cyclebetes Cross-Canada National Relay kicked off this past Saturday from Blackrock Beach in Halifax, NS. We were treated to a very sensation send-off, with a representative from the Mayor’s office, the local MLA, Pharmasave Atlantic, a live band, and a BBQ breakfast. Before departing, the Maritimes team took a quick dip in the Atlantic Ocean, and we were on our way!

Our Norco tandem bicycle (the new and improved “Diabetsey II”) took us through Halifax on our first day and into Moncton, NB for our first camp. The Maritimes team spent the second day touring the tandem through Moncton and up to Sussex with the Mike’s Bike shop – Cyclebetes 200km Community ride. Riders from the area came out to support the cause, raising a total of 1$3,000 big ones for JDRF.

For our Day 3, we hit the road again, on our way to Woodstock, and while there weren’t any bands playing… the team members were rockin it! This team’s not messing around, there’s a disease to be cured, and they’re going to help make it happen. Along our way we have been treated to some true east coast generosity as we’re made stops along the route at community Pharmasave stores. The stores made donations to our cause, provided water, and made sure that we were fully stocked with supplies for the riders.

Today: Quebec City here we come

If you would like to make a general donation to the Cyclebetes teams, you can do this here

We recently announced our exciting new partnership with the Business in Vancouver Media Group.

Business in Vancouver (BIV) is an award-winning weekly newspaper serving Greater Vancouver since 1989. Targeted at business decision-makers, it provides local business news and information every Tuesday and reaches the Lower Mainland’s business leaders every week.

Many BIV readers are cyclists, and, of course, have families, so we really appreciate the opportunity to advertise our Hope to North Vancouver Community Ride and North Shore Family Festival happening on September 4, 2010.

The purpose of this blog today, however, is to acknowledge the Can Do! attitude we appreciate from the Business in Vancouver Staff. As you know, the Cyclebetes blog is dedicated to spreading the Can do! Spirit, so it seemed very fitting to share this with you.

From the moment we were introduced to BIV as a potential media sponsor, they have been so open to helping us. “What can we do for you guys? Put your requests together and we’ll see what we can do, but we are definitely prepared to do something to help you out.” So we put our requests on paper and were met with a “Yes, we can do that.” Wow! From the beginning they have been all about Can do! and we continue to experience it as we work together.

It’s so refreshing to work with a company like this and we are happy to recognize The Business in Vancouver Media Group as a Corporate Can do!

I recently spoke to Cyclebetes BC Provincial Team rider Jen Aragon. We were not discussing the Can do! spirit per say. What was noteworthy is that it kept coming up and up and up!

Safe to say the Can do spirit is at the very heart of Cyclebetes and everyone associated with us.

As you know Cyclebetes is the legacy of Kyle’s promise to his daughter Taylor. Are you delivering on a promise and to who?

I promised my son, Dylan, when he was diagnosed in 2005, that I would do everything in my power to find a cure for type-1 diabetes, and that I will never give up until a cure is found. I’m delivering on that promise!

What does participating in the ride mean to you and your family?

We have participated in the TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes for 5 years and have raised just under $40,000 in that time. For me, Cyclebetes is a way for me to keep raising money for JDRF, and spread awareness about type 1, with the added benefit of being part of an incredible event, not only for fitness purposes, but for the experience as a whole.

What do you hope to accomplish?

Aside from hoping I can still walk after riding across BC? lol…
For me the goals are twofold:

fundraising and awareness

to show my son, and others, that if you put your mind to it, you CAN DO anything. Nothing is impossible if you believe in yourself.

How would a cure change your life?

A cure would change my life in so many ways, it’s hard to even imagine sometimes. It would mean no more added worry, no more middle of the night blood tests, no more counting carbs, or stopping in the middle of an activity to check blood, no more needles, blood tests, purse full of dextrose tablets, or emergency glucagon shots, no more hypoglycemic night time seizures, no more hospital stays just because Dylan has a cold or flu, and no more constant concern over what the future will bring for him in terms of diabetes side effects. But most importantly, a cure would give Dylan, and so many other kids, the childhood they so desperately want and deserve.

Is there a message you would like to extend to others?

A cure is out there, and we WILL find it. Research is getting so close, but it’s expensive. We need your help. We can do this!

What do people need to know about type 1 diabetes?

That it’s not hereditary, or a result of poor diet, lack of exercise, or any other self-inflicted reason. That it’s random, deadly, and affects thousands of Canadian children and adults.

Our 2009 ride across Canada for juvenile diabetes research was a tremendous success; we built a foundation, met so many extraordinary people, and raised, together, raised over $500,000 for the cause. Well once just wasn’t enough, the disease still exists, and so we’re doing it again. On August 14th we kick-off in Halifax: 50 team riders, 23 days, 7 provinces, 1 tandem bicycle, and a goal to deliver on a promise for a cure.

During the relay, teams will be riding the Cyclebetes tandem bike (nicknamed Dia-betsy) symbolizing that great things are accomplished not alone but in ‘tandem’ with others. Teams will then pass the insulin vial baton to the next team at the provincial border. This is an extraordinary event. There are many ways to support and participate AND there is an opportunity for the entire family to do something FUN and healthy together!

Community Rides are happening in tandem with the National Relay across Canada. In most centers participants can chose from a elite ride, family ride or kids ride. Details on all these organized rides can be found here: http://www.cyclebetes.com/community-rides.htm.

Family Bike Festivals also happen in tandem with the National Relay and Community Rides. There will be family picnics and bbq’s, an obstacle course for kids, safety stations and bike drills, entertainment , music and more. It’s a fun, exciting event for the whole family and it’s a great opportunity to get out and get moving together.

Come out and join in the fun and support the riders as the take part in this epic journey.

We are now on our third week of building and this should feel like the hardest week, but don’t worry, you can look forward to your recover week next week.

So let’s build again from last week. We are going to do something very similar and increase the set times on the Tuesday and Thursdays workout and the duration of the Saturdays workout.

Take a look at this weeks goals:

Monday: Recovery Day or Yoga
Tuesday: 1.5hr flat ride (with 2 x 20 min tempo with 10min recovery between them)
Wednesday: Cross train (swim, run, gym, etc)
Thursday: 1.5hr (20min warm-up 2 x 20min hill, then easy spin)
Friday: Rest Day (stretch or yoga)
Saturday: 2hr (15min warm up, 60min Medium effort but keep it consistent throughout, 15min cool down)
Sunday: 3hr LSD (long slow distance), this should be a very chill pace, keeping heart rate low and legs spinning

Tip for this week – keep the motivation high by riding with friends. Choose a few days that you can get a buddy or two to join you. It makes the session more enjoyable and helps you keep accountable to making sure the sessions happens.

Enjoy and look forward to some rest the week after.
