Cyclebetes go MAD- Day 30 – Go for it!

Friday, November 27th, 2009

Wow – Day 30!

I started off with the idea of helping everyone go MAD. But you know what – I went MAD in the process! I became completely tuned in everyday – finding ways to make a difference and every day I walked my talk!  My heart feels full. I feel connected. I am thankful that I had this opportunity that I am a member of such an extraordinary like minded team!  I am grateful that my job as Director of Cyclebetes of School Initiatives allows me to communicate with, meet and work alongside amazing youth who are engaged in leadership and making a difference. To all of you thanks so much for making my life richer – I am so grateful to be in community with YOU! You are EXTRAORDINARY!

“We must overcome the notion that we must be regular….it robs you of the chance to be extraordinary and leads you to mediocre”. Uta Hagen

“You are the only one who can make a difference. What ever your dream is go for it”. Magic Johnson

Let’s keep going for it!

Cyclebetes go MAD- Day 27- a small footprint

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

world2
An ecological footprint is the area of productive land required to produce the food, energy and materials consumed by a person or country, and to absorb the waste they produce, or cause to be produced.

Canada and the US have 2 of the largest footprint in the world. The US is 9.57 and Canada is 8.56. A large footprint is indicative of a higher standard of living but also a lifestyle that wastes resources. You can measure your ecological footprint by taking the Ecological Footprint Quiz at www.myfootprint.org.

Here’s some ideas for reducing your footprint:

  • Walk or cycle when you can
  • ride share or use public transit
  • downsize your car or go electric or hybrid
  • avoid air travel
  • eat less red meat
  • buy local in season produce
  • reduce, reuse and recycle
  • insulate your home and turn down the thermostat.
  • You (and your community) can get a jumpstart on cycling by Championing a Cyclebetes Spin-a-Thon at your local secondary school.

Cyclebetes go MAD- Day 23 – Speak Up!

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Have you ever found yourself in a group discussion, agreeing with what was being said, but thinking important points were being missed but not offering anything because you think your ideas will be dismissed, laughed at or shot down? It is very likely (ok absolutely certain) that others are feeling the same way.

This is called groupthink and it can be a powerfully positive environment to be in or a stifling, limiting one.

GO MAD! Next time – don’t remain silent!!! SPEAK UP!
Say what you think!
Do not be frightened of sounding foolish!
Others in the group may be (ok will be) grateful for your intervention!

Always encourage everyone to say what they think and make sure all points of view are treated with respect. Sharing ideas and collaborating leads to more ideas and better ideas.
One idea will jumpstart another taking everything to a whole new level. Speak up!

Leadership – Are you in?

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

It is through one person having the courage to lead that extraordinary things are accomplished. It always begins the same way, one brave soul steps forward and says. “I’m in!”

Leadership is about having the spirit and desire to make a difference.

Leadership is having a vision sharing it with others.

Leadership is passionately tackling problems knowing a solution is just waiting to be found.

Leadership is taking one step at a time and deciding to keep going with each step.

The Accu-Chek Cyclebetes Spin-a-Thon Student Leadership Program is among the most challenging and satisfying work I’ve done.  I am able to see, hear and experience how lives are changed and transformed in the very best ways. I will share with you an excerpt from a letter from a sponsor teach, “You challenged my students and me to continue to push to fulfill our vision. What we experienced was epic in my life, the lives of my students, the history of our school and community. We are forever changed. We are capable of much more than we thought we were. What a gift. We are truly grateful!”

It doesn’t get much better than that!

Leadership is everyone’s business. We have all said, “Why don’t they do something about this?” The next time you hear yourself say that look in the mirror. Ask again.

Every new project we take on is an opportunity for greatness – for attaining a personal best that further defines us and our own standard of excellence.

Seeing is Believing

Believe

Accu-Chek Cyclebetes blog followers know that Accu-Chek Cyclebetes was created as a legacy for Team H2V to carry forth the promise of Kyle Balagno and to honor and celebrate the accomplishment of the 5 man team who, against all odds and a thundering chorus of naysayers, cycled across Canada in 8 days.

The depth of what we dreamed you may not know.

We wanted to transform people in the same way we had been transformed as part of the Team H2V group. We wanted others to experience being part of something big that hadn’t been done. To believe that anything is possible if you amass a team of like minded ‘can do’ people and keep pushing.  We wanted to touch youth and allow them to grow and reach a potential beyond what they thought they could…

…so two years ago we dared to dream that the legacy would have far reaching impact. Today we are one step closer with the announcement of the Accu-Chek Cyclebetes Endowment Fund.

The Accu-Chek Cyclebetes Endowment Fund and Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship Program

Youth leadership and delivering on a promise to accelerate a cure for juvenile diabetes are the cornerstones of CAccu-Chek yclebetes. Building the Leaders of Tomorrow through a Accu-Chek Cyclebetes Endowment Fund will allow for continued, long term investment in our student leaders. Ten percent of all dollars raised through Accu-Chek Cyclebetes Spin-a-Thons will support the endowment fund which will offer deserving youth scholarships for outstanding leadership, overcoming adversity and community contribution. Participating schools and students will be able to apply for funds to support their ongoing initiatives.

As a reader of this blog you have chosen to join us on this journey – thank you for believing as we do that we can do!  We are honoured by your support.

Keep Believing.
