On the rode again

Monday, July 5th, 2010

Our 2009 ride across Canada for juvenile diabetes research was a tremendous success; we built a foundation, met so many extraordinary people, and raised, together, raised over $500,000 for the cause. Well once just wasn’t enough, the disease still exists, and so we’re doing it again. On August 14th we kick-off in Halifax: 50 team riders, 23 days, 7 provinces, 1 tandem bicycle, and a goal to deliver on a promise for a cure.

During the relay, teams will be riding the Cyclebetes tandem bike (nicknamed Dia-betsy) symbolizing that great things are accomplished not alone but in ‘tandem’ with others. Teams will then pass the insulin vial baton to the next team at the provincial border. This is an extraordinary event. There are many ways to support and participate AND there is an opportunity for the entire family to do something FUN and healthy together!

Community Rides are happening in tandem with the National Relay across Canada. In most centers participants can chose from a elite ride, family ride or kids ride. Details on all these organized rides can be found here: http://www.cyclebetes.com/community-rides.htm.

Family Bike Festivals also happen in tandem with the National Relay and Community Rides. There will be family picnics and bbq’s, an obstacle course for kids, safety stations and bike drills, entertainment , music and more. It’s a fun, exciting event for the whole family and it’s a great opportunity to get out and get moving together.

Come out and join in the fun and support the riders as the take part in this epic journey.

Please help share our ride with those that you feel might be interested – hit the Facebook or Twitter button, feel free to cut and paste this story into your blog.  And email me if you have any questions.

I can do this!

Monday, June 21st, 2010

The Can do spirit is in evidence everyday at Cyclebetes.

Last week Cyclebetes spoke to Maritime Team Member Stephen Beamish and aksed – what’s your story? It didn’t take long—and there it was—Can do!

Halifax businessman and father Stephen Beamish is delivering on a very important promise.  “My 12 year old daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes two years ago. Like Kyle Balango I promised her I would do everything I could to help find a cure.  What father would turn down a chance like this?”

Stephen has signed on as a member of the Cyclebetes Provincial Relay team.  He will have to cross the Maritime region, an area covering 980 kms on a bike. “This will be the first time I have ridden in an event like this…it will be the first time I have ridden a bike any distance at all” he states. Needless to say Stephen is hard at work getting comfortable on a bike and training to prepare for the August 14, 2010 kick off. “I’ve always been curious about who went to 24 hour gyms…now I know….ME!” he quips. He will be riding the Cyclebetes tandem bike symbolizing that great things are always accomplished in ‘tandem’ with others. “When I decided to join the team, I set myself the goal of not only riding during my shifts but as much as this 45 year old body could handle. I want to be an example to my kids that when you set a goal you work to make it happen. I can do this!” he states. “I’m really looking forward to it and the knowledge that maybe it will be my fundraising efforts and those of the Maritime team that will pay for one more hour of research, one more piece of equipment, one more ‘try’ at a breakthrough that will lead to what we all seek, a cure for our children, family and friends.”

Cyclebetes – Top 10 Can do’s – Spring 2010

The Top 10 Can Do’s – Spring 2010!

All Cyclebetes student leaders embody the spirit of Can do!

They continually inspire me with their ingenuity, heart and (in many cases) resilience in the face of adversity.
In the spirit of Can do!  here are The Top 10 from Spring 2010!

1. Halley Skiffington – Sir John A MacDonald HS – Halifax –

Halley stepped up  to make a difference in her step brother Bradley’s life by leading the Cyclebetes student leadership team and driving the Spin-a-thon at Sir John A MacDonald. She demonstrated selflessness, leadership and heart!

2. Charles Best Secondary leadership team – Coquiltam, BC -

Students  sought out and  contacted Dr. Charles Best’s granddaughter in Ontario and asked  her to kick off the Spin-a-Thon at a  school wide assemble by skype! She delivered a deeply meaningful message to the student body. Students demonstrated ingenuity and creativity.

3. Jonathan Engleman- Vancouver, BC –

Jonathan wanted to lead a Spin-a-Thon at his school Notre Dame Regional in 2009. It was not possible then but school administrators promised Spring of 2010. Now as an  alumni of Notre Dame and a first year university student Jonathan conducted all promotion, recruitment and communication via facebook.  It appeared to be going well  as the 18 registered teams began arriving on Spin day.  BUT Jonathan realized the pledge forms and the concept of raising money for JDRF had been overlooked! He quickly devised a plan to hand out pledge forms on the spot and added a ‘telethon’ aspect to the event announcing new totals every hour of the 24 hour event. The Notre Dame Spin-a-Thon raised $9800.00. Jonathan demonstrated resilience, determination  and creativity in the face of adversity.

4. North Delta leadership team – North Delta, BC –

At the 12 hour Spin-a-Thon students added messages to the INBOX – a wall sized INBOX poster invited students to write on coloured post it notes and tell why they were participating. The INBOX told a meaningful and inspiring story and reinforced the purpose of Spin-a-Thon. North Delta Leaders showed creativity and purpose.

5. JN Burnett leadership team – Richmond, BC –

Students leaders created not just a Cyclebetes Spin-a-Thon and a funds and awareness drive for JDRF but presented a 12 hour long  talent show featuring hosts,  singers, dancers, songwriters, and musicians all students at JN Burnett.  The level of talent was jaw dropping! JN Burnett leaders demonstrated  extraordinary  school pride and spirit!

6. North Shore Super Spin – North and West Vancouver, BC –

Student leadership team brought together student leaders from 9 schools – uniting North and West Vancouver – public and private schools – making the Cyclebetes Spin-a-Thon a district wide event. NS Super Spin leaders did something that had never been done and united  two entire school districts in one common purpose.

7. Elgin Park leadership team – Surrey, BC. –

Cut backs made it impossible to ‘find’ start up cash to fund leadership t-shirts and the Spin-a-Thon Fueling Station. (The previous year the students council, teachers fund and Parent council all contributed to offset costs). The students ran a Mini -Community Spin in front of the local Tim Horton’s (with management permission) 6 weeks in advance of Spin-a-Thon. One student rode a stationary bike while several others handed out flyers. That day they raised over 500.00 and recruited a very special team – Team Intrepid. Team Intrepid was comprised of newly diagnosed type one families. Scott and his wife Lila  just happened to be walking by Tim Horton’s their 4 year son old Zack had been diagnosed with type one a few months earlier. They were filled with hope by what the Elgin students were doing, they went home and called other newly diagnosed families and entered a team – Team Intrepid. It was an Oh WOW / Can do kinda’ day! Elgin leaders demonstrated resourcefulness in the face of adversity and instilled enormous HOPE in 6 newly diagnosed type one families.

8. Arthur Voaden leadership team – St. Thomas, Ontario –

These student leaders are trailblazers they were the first school in Ontario to host a Cyclebetes Spin-a-Thon. They planned and executed a fantastically successful event. As a result of their work and the attention generated by the event Ontario is buzzing with Cyclebetes fever. Arthur Voaden leaders demonstrated courage and belief and their efforts have extended well beyond their school’s event! The success of their event is  beyond measure!

9. NS Super Spin – Wall of HOPE –

During the 24 hour Spin-a-Thon participants were  encouraged to  leave a message on the Wall of HOPE. It was thought provoking, inspiring and gave HOPE to all. NS Spin filled the hearts of all participants with HOPE – hope for the future – hope for a cure for type one – hope for a generation of make a difference teens.

10. Elgin Park leadership team –

Elgin was fortunate to have Breakfast TV cover their Spin-a-Thon in 2009. That coverage brought great attention to an important cause and showcased a school and student population with TONS of spirit. Would they come back in 2010? TV programs don’t normally cover an event twice.  So holding their breath Elgin asked (what did they  have to lose?). Breakfast TV said – We had so much FUN at your event last year – Can DO!!! Elgin leadership team demonstrated an unwavering  Can do! spirit from start to finish!

It was an exciting Spring Spin-a-Thon season! I truly have the very best job in the world!  Thank you sponsor teachers for your Can do mentorship and guidance and students for your no holds barred Can do Spirit!

I look forward to watching all of you grow and go on to accomplish more great things!

To quote Dr. Seuss “You’re off to great places – you’re off, off and away!”
All the very best to the Cyclebetes GRADS of 2010!
To everyone else see you in the Fall!

Wow… this Kid Can Do

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

As the students at Elgin Park secondary prepared for their 12 hour Spin-a-thon earlier this month, we were told that one of the student was going to be doing something extraordinary for the silent auction.  Aspiring, 16 year old, artist, Vincent Cheng was going to paint a portrait of an iconic figure… to music… in about 11 minutes… in front of the crowd.  That was all we knew; all other details of the work were to be kept secret. Only Vincent knew what the canvas was to be transformed into.

This is what we experienced: Or watch Video here

After this amazing show I sat down with Vincent to learn more about how he got involved in this type of art and how long he has been doing this for.  His answer: “This was my third time” – he told me that he attended a youth leadership conference and saw a gentleman perform this type of art show and though he would give it a try.  I was shocked, he was a natural.

Nobody taught him, he didn’t read a how-to book, it was something he wanted to do.  It was something he must of said “I CAN DO that”

You can see more of Vincent Cheng’s work on his blog

Teachers Can do!

Friday, June 11th, 2010

I love teachers! I think they are amazing I hold them in the highest regard. Theirs is the noblest of professions and one of the most challenging. Educators are passionate about teaching and passionate about youth.

Getting to know the Cyclebetes sponsor teachers is one of the greatest parts my job. They are inspiring, resourceful, FUN and dedicated. They know the Can do spirit because they are guided by it daily.Exploring the Can do with them has proven difficult. They are hard to catch – busy people constantly moving, constantly engaged always with more to do.

At the recent Elgin Park Spin-a-Thon I had the chance to speak to sponsor teacher Sue janzen (she was doing an hour long shift on the bike) I had her cornered!  I found that not only was she instilling the Can do in her students but that she was still learning about the extent of her own Can do!

Cheryl: Gotcha! You are captive on the bike mind if we talk Can do?
Sue: (smiling) Shoot!

Cheryl: How would you define the Can do spirit?
Sue: It means you believe you can do anything big or small. You understand that the only barriers encountered as those that we impose upon ourselves AND that it’s never too late to be proud of yourself.

Cheryl: This year you learned something about your own can do spirit!
Sue: Yes! I found I CAN ask for things! I naturally like to be the ‘giver’ that’s where I’m most comfortable. But I had to teach my students how to go out into the community and ask for support and contributions. How could I teach what I didn’t know??? I had to put myself in that role – it was uncomfortable at first – but then I found that by nature we all have a giving spirit. And that by asking I was actually providing an opportunity. I can ask now instead of being just the giver. HUGE!!!

Cheryl: What do you tell your students to inspire the Can do spirit?
Sue: I encourage them to think outside their comfort zones because that’s where real greatness happens—to challenge themselves to do more than they thought you could! Works every time!
