Student leaders TRANSFORM!

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

I HAVE THE BEST JOB IN THE WORLD!
(sorry for shouting).

As Director the Cyclebetes School Initiatives, I am witness to student transformations almost every day!

How?
I’ll explain – the Cyclebetes Spin-a-Thon Student Leadership Program is a real world leadership opportunity. Students meet every element of mounting a school wide/community event – sponsorship acquisition, marketing and promotion, communications, media relations, logistics (to name a few) head on! They are thrust out of their comfort zones and with our encouragement, support and resources work through the highs and lows, triumphs and obstacles that define the process. Some are already leadership oriented others are quiet young people falling beneath the radar in their high school populations. Quiet unassuming leaders-in-the- making who step up and make impactful presentations at city council meetings, have local businesses say yes to sponsorship support and high school peers asking where they can sign up. They take the mic during the Spin-a-Thon event and offer inspirational pump up speeches to students, faculty, family and the business community! WOW!

We ask student leaders to complete a feedback form after their Spin-a-Thon.  In it they are asked “What did you learn about yourself?”

The responses always read like this – I learned that people listen to me. I learned I could make a difference. I learned I’m dedicated and determined! I learned I can do a whole lot more than I think I can! I learned I’m good at this!

These are life lessons and transformations of the most important kind!

Taking the LEAP

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

“How wonderful is it that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world” - Anne Frank

Anne Frank got it right. The only we have to do is choose to begin. For me the best way is to choose and…… leap! I’ve never been one to take the small, get your feet wet steps. To be honest there have been a few times when I wish I had – but all in all the Choose/Leap technique works for me.

It fills me with an immediate feeling of commitment and images of what could be! I always find like minded people once I leap and there is a fast sense of purpose and belonging. In fact some of the most cherished people in my life (other than my amazing family of course) are those whose paths I’ve crossed and been honored to work with when on a mission to make a difference and improve the world. My mission at this point is to help youth develop into strong, dynamic leaders through the Cyclebetes Spin-a-Thon Student Leadership Program and to support a promise a friend made to his daughter to help find a cure for her type one diabetes.

The bonus is – I am surrounded by outstanding young people and teachers  who want to improve the world. They know how to leap!!

Know any schools, students and teachers who would benefit by knowing more about the Cyclebetes Spin-a-Thon Student Leadership Program? Leap! Email me Cheryl@cyclebetes.com.
I’ll send you lots of great info!
