Wow… this Kid Can Do

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

As the students at Elgin Park secondary prepared for their 12 hour Spin-a-thon earlier this month, we were told that one of the student was going to be doing something extraordinary for the silent auction.  Aspiring, 16 year old, artist, Vincent Cheng was going to paint a portrait of an iconic figure… to music… in about 11 minutes… in front of the crowd.  That was all we knew; all other details of the work were to be kept secret. Only Vincent knew what the canvas was to be transformed into.

This is what we experienced: Or watch Video here

After this amazing show I sat down with Vincent to learn more about how he got involved in this type of art and how long he has been doing this for.  His answer: “This was my third time” – he told me that he attended a youth leadership conference and saw a gentleman perform this type of art show and though he would give it a try.  I was shocked, he was a natural.

Nobody taught him, he didn’t read a how-to book, it was something he wanted to do.  It was something he must of said “I CAN DO that”

You can see more of Vincent Cheng’s work on his blog

Elgin Can Do

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

As a matter of a fact, as you prepare to read this blog post, the students at Elgin Park Secondary school in Surrey, British Columbia are preparing to  do it for a second year in a row.  On June 2, the Elgin students will host their second Cyclebetes Spin-a-thon – making it bigger and better.

Organized by a small group of students, this 12 hour Spin-a-thon will see teams of up to 12 riders, will keep stationary bikes spinning from 8am – 8pm with all of the funds raised going to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Currently there are 8 students at Elgin Park who have been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and students want to see that number at 0.  To help accomplish that goal, they have set their fund raising goal at $40,000!

They have a silent auction, tons of prizes, a BBQ, local television news covering the event, and heaps of other great things happening all day.  Last year’s event far exceeded our team expectations of what the students had prepared to do – the leadership knew what they “Can Do” and they did.

Spin kick off week – Big WOW!!

Monday, January 11th, 2010

arthur-voadenIt was an outstanding week (Jan 4 – 9th)  – the kick-off of the 2010 Cyclebetes Spin-a-Thons!

Two awesome events – Arthur Voaden Secondary in St. Thomas Ontario and Notre Dame Regional in Vancouver, BC started things off with a big WOW!
“The atmosphere in the gym was electric! The music, the energy the interaction between teachers and students and the enthusiasm was a complete inspiration!”

Those were the words of Cyclebetes Provincial Relay Ontario Captain Charlie Barnes who attended the 12 hour Spin-a-Thon at Arthur Voaden in St. Thomas, Ontario on Thursday. The student leadership team raised close to 5,000.00 and netted wide media coverage from TV, radio and print! Outstanding job by sponsor teacher Melonie Congdon and her student leaders! The pictures tell the story.Click to view: Arthur Voaden St Thomas Cyclebetes 7 Jan 2010

Notre Dame Regional School Spin-a-Thon in Vancouver was spearheaded by one extraordinary young man – Jonathan Engleman – alumni of Notre Dame now in his first year at UBC. Last year he tried to mount a spin but school administrators nixed suggesting “next year”. Disappointed but undeterred Jonathan accepted and moved on. Well …. Jonathan described by all as determined and exceptional came back and executed a 24 hour Spin that rocked the house (school) and established it as a yearly event. Total raised $8,532.80!

Both events captured the true essence of a student led Cyclebetes Spin-a-Thon. They uplifted the student body, brought joy and FUN to all, integrated students and  faculty, drew aware to type one diabetes, raised significant funds supporting research and a cure, promoted fitness and health, united the school population and much more.

Student Leaders and Sponsor Teachers experienced transformations of their own as they experienced first hand what they Can do!!

Congratulations to Melanie and these outstanding young people!

Student leaders TRANSFORM!

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

I HAVE THE BEST JOB IN THE WORLD!
(sorry for shouting).

As Director the Cyclebetes School Initiatives, I am witness to student transformations almost every day!

How?
I’ll explain – the Cyclebetes Spin-a-Thon Student Leadership Program is a real world leadership opportunity. Students meet every element of mounting a school wide/community event – sponsorship acquisition, marketing and promotion, communications, media relations, logistics (to name a few) head on! They are thrust out of their comfort zones and with our encouragement, support and resources work through the highs and lows, triumphs and obstacles that define the process. Some are already leadership oriented others are quiet young people falling beneath the radar in their high school populations. Quiet unassuming leaders-in-the- making who step up and make impactful presentations at city council meetings, have local businesses say yes to sponsorship support and high school peers asking where they can sign up. They take the mic during the Spin-a-Thon event and offer inspirational pump up speeches to students, faculty, family and the business community! WOW!

We ask student leaders to complete a feedback form after their Spin-a-Thon.  In it they are asked “What did you learn about yourself?”

The responses always read like this – I learned that people listen to me. I learned I could make a difference. I learned I’m dedicated and determined! I learned I can do a whole lot more than I think I can! I learned I’m good at this!

These are life lessons and transformations of the most important kind!
