I can do this!

Monday, June 21st, 2010

The Can do spirit is in evidence everyday at Cyclebetes.

Last week Cyclebetes spoke to Maritime Team Member Stephen Beamish and aksed – what’s your story? It didn’t take long—and there it was—Can do!

Halifax businessman and father Stephen Beamish is delivering on a very important promise.  “My 12 year old daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes two years ago. Like Kyle Balango I promised her I would do everything I could to help find a cure.  What father would turn down a chance like this?”

Stephen has signed on as a member of the Cyclebetes Provincial Relay team.  He will have to cross the Maritime region, an area covering 980 kms on a bike. “This will be the first time I have ridden in an event like this…it will be the first time I have ridden a bike any distance at all” he states. Needless to say Stephen is hard at work getting comfortable on a bike and training to prepare for the August 14, 2010 kick off. “I’ve always been curious about who went to 24 hour gyms…now I know….ME!” he quips. He will be riding the Cyclebetes tandem bike symbolizing that great things are always accomplished in ‘tandem’ with others. “When I decided to join the team, I set myself the goal of not only riding during my shifts but as much as this 45 year old body could handle. I want to be an example to my kids that when you set a goal you work to make it happen. I can do this!” he states. “I’m really looking forward to it and the knowledge that maybe it will be my fundraising efforts and those of the Maritime team that will pay for one more hour of research, one more piece of equipment, one more ‘try’ at a breakthrough that will lead to what we all seek, a cure for our children, family and friends.”

Cyclebetes go MAD- Day 21- Write a book

Monday, November 16th, 2009

Microsoft Word - Principles E-book.docBooks have the power to change the world. Perhaps why people ban books and burn them — it will stop the flow of ideas! Recognize the power of the written word and write your own book – or start small and create a blog! First think of a great title and write your book. Once it’s written, put it on the web, publish it yourself or find a publisher. Willie Cromack is the CEO of Cyclebetes. He and Matt Young who were 2 of the original Team H2V riders (our Cyclebetes legacy!) wrote a book about something they were passionate about. It is available in soft cover at bookstores across the country it is also available to you here – as an ebook and a no charge gift to you!

Download the book and give it a read – it’s FANTASTIC!!!!

Seeing is Believing

Believe

Accu-Chek Cyclebetes blog followers know that Accu-Chek Cyclebetes was created as a legacy for Team H2V to carry forth the promise of Kyle Balagno and to honor and celebrate the accomplishment of the 5 man team who, against all odds and a thundering chorus of naysayers, cycled across Canada in 8 days.

The depth of what we dreamed you may not know.

We wanted to transform people in the same way we had been transformed as part of the Team H2V group. We wanted others to experience being part of something big that hadn’t been done. To believe that anything is possible if you amass a team of like minded ‘can do’ people and keep pushing.  We wanted to touch youth and allow them to grow and reach a potential beyond what they thought they could…

…so two years ago we dared to dream that the legacy would have far reaching impact. Today we are one step closer with the announcement of the Accu-Chek Cyclebetes Endowment Fund.

The Accu-Chek Cyclebetes Endowment Fund and Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship Program

Youth leadership and delivering on a promise to accelerate a cure for juvenile diabetes are the cornerstones of CAccu-Chek yclebetes. Building the Leaders of Tomorrow through a Accu-Chek Cyclebetes Endowment Fund will allow for continued, long term investment in our student leaders. Ten percent of all dollars raised through Accu-Chek Cyclebetes Spin-a-Thons will support the endowment fund which will offer deserving youth scholarships for outstanding leadership, overcoming adversity and community contribution. Participating schools and students will be able to apply for funds to support their ongoing initiatives.

As a reader of this blog you have chosen to join us on this journey – thank you for believing as we do that we can do!  We are honoured by your support.

Keep Believing.

Reflection.

Sunday, April 12th, 2009

Today, I was reminded how lucky I am to do what I do. I get to do a job I love to help a cause that I passionately believe in. What more could I ask for?

I was at our family Easter dinner tonight and was talking to my father about Accu-Chek Cyclebetes. He and my mother have been away all winter, so they are kind of out of the loop when it comes to my career. I’m sure you could imagine how enthused I was when I shared the stories about the Spin-a-thons at Charles Best, Windsor and Rockridge, and, of course, those to come. I told them about Anthony Sedlak from the Food Network joining the ride and of so many other opportunities that we are exploring.

Being able to share my story has led to a time of reflection for me this evening. I have loved taking the time to think about all that has transpired so far and about where this amazing journey will take us. I know what the outcome will be and am so excited about the path we will take to get there!

Dream big. Go hard. Take the time to reflect.

I promise I will do the same.

In closing, I want to share a great article that just ran in the Georgia Straight…you will recognize the photo!!
