Jen Can do!

Monday, July 26th, 2010

I recently spoke to Cyclebetes BC Provincial Team rider Jen Aragon. We were not discussing the Can do! spirit per say. What was noteworthy is that it kept coming up and up and up!

Safe to say the Can do spirit is at the very heart of Cyclebetes and everyone associated with us.

As you know Cyclebetes is the legacy of Kyle’s promise to his daughter Taylor. Are you delivering on a promise and to who?

I promised my son, Dylan, when he was diagnosed in 2005, that I would do everything in my power to find a cure for type-1 diabetes, and that I will never give up until a cure is found. I’m delivering on that promise!

What does participating in the ride mean to you and your family?

We have participated in the TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes for 5 years and have raised just under $40,000 in that time. For me, Cyclebetes is a way for me to keep raising money for JDRF, and spread awareness about type 1, with the added benefit of being part of an incredible event, not only for fitness purposes, but for the experience as a whole.

What do you hope to accomplish?

Aside from hoping I can still walk after riding across BC? lol…
For me the goals are twofold:

  1. fundraising and awareness
  2. to show my son, and others, that if you put your mind to it, you CAN DO anything. Nothing is impossible if you believe in yourself.

How would a cure change your life?

A cure would change my life in so many ways, it’s hard to even imagine sometimes. It would mean no more added worry, no more middle of the night blood tests, no more counting carbs, or stopping in the middle of an activity to check blood, no more needles, blood tests, purse full of dextrose tablets, or emergency glucagon shots, no more hypoglycemic night time seizures, no more hospital stays just because Dylan has a cold or flu, and no more constant concern over what the future will bring for him in terms of diabetes side effects. But most importantly, a cure would give Dylan, and so many other kids, the childhood they so desperately want and deserve.

Is there a message you would like to extend to others?

A cure is out there, and we WILL find it. Research is getting so close, but it’s expensive. We need your help. We can do this!

What do people need to know about type 1 diabetes?

That it’s not hereditary, or a result of poor diet, lack of exercise, or any other self-inflicted reason. That it’s random, deadly, and affects thousands of Canadian children and adults.

What can you do?

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

I see Can Do! attitudes in play every day.

That’s because my job as the Cyclebetes Director of School Initiatives allows me on-going communication with our student leaders across the country. I love the spirit of youth – there’s so much to learn from them! The internal critic that is dominating and forceful in our adult minds just hasn’t had the time to develop in young people and as a result they come up with amazing ideas!  Their internal critic is saying, “Cool”, “Sweeeet” “Wicked”.” Ours is sounding more like this, “NO….Don’t say that it’s a bad idea!”, “NO….Everyone will laugh”, “NO….That’ll never work!”

The Cyclebetes student leaders come up with some really wild ideas, they reach for the sky and beyond. They say What if and Why not? They place goals and targets high on the scale. Adults around them encourage them to be realistic and to lower their expectations. Hearts in the right place of course – not wanting the students to be disappointed by ‘failure’.  From what I’ve experienced as a mom, to a now almost 20 year old daughter, and from witnessing the journeys of the Cyclebetes student leaders isn’t it better to support the Can Do! attitude with encouragement and a silent inner critic and judge? Some of the most amazing, creative, extraordinary work my daughter produced was with a vision that I quietly thought was unattainable. She also experienced ‘failures’ but she simply picked herself up and kept running albeit on a slightly revised course. Sometimes the ‘failure’ impacted her more deeply but the lessons and the accelerated growth she gained from non-success was greater than previous successes! I’ve seen student leaders solve problems and go around obstacles with ideas I would never have thought of –and –they work – work very WELL! I’ve watched students debrief an event identifying with great enthusiasm parts that didn’t work but they’ve already got tons of amazing ideas for next time.

Failure – no problem – just a dip in the road on the way to success!

What I’ve learned from youth – Do not fear failure and if I can dream it – there’s a pretty good chance I can do it!
Thanks for the lessons!
As teachers you’re pretty good!

Accu-Chek Cyclebetes go MAD- Day 2 – Show Kindness

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

moving-carsOur world has become increasingly fast paced and self focused.

An act of kindness is something we can all do.

It delights and surprises the recipient.

People remember kindness; it warms their heart and leaves an indelible impression.
You may never know what a difference a small act of kindness will have on someone.
There is a benefit to you – you will immediately feel happier for having offered it.

Yesterday I saw a homeless gentleman sitting outside a drugstore playing a flute. It was a beautiful sound that was in complete juxtaposition to the swirling rush of folks around him.
His hat was on the ground in front of him.
I hurriedly went into the drugstore purchasing what I needed but thinking about the young man.
I dropped a toonie into his hat as I walked by. He stopped, made eye contact and with gratitude and dignity said, “thank you very much.”
I smiled, “your welcome”.
It was a humbling moment.
I’m still thinking about him. Why is he on the street? He is someone’s son, brother, maybe husband and father. I will look for him this week. I learned I can do more.

I challenge you to perform at least one act of kindness today.
What did you do?

Taking the LEAP

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

“How wonderful is it that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world” - Anne Frank

Anne Frank got it right. The only we have to do is choose to begin. For me the best way is to choose and…… leap! I’ve never been one to take the small, get your feet wet steps. To be honest there have been a few times when I wish I had – but all in all the Choose/Leap technique works for me.

It fills me with an immediate feeling of commitment and images of what could be! I always find like minded people once I leap and there is a fast sense of purpose and belonging. In fact some of the most cherished people in my life (other than my amazing family of course) are those whose paths I’ve crossed and been honored to work with when on a mission to make a difference and improve the world. My mission at this point is to help youth develop into strong, dynamic leaders through the Cyclebetes Spin-a-Thon Student Leadership Program and to support a promise a friend made to his daughter to help find a cure for her type one diabetes.

The bonus is – I am surrounded by outstanding young people and teachers  who want to improve the world. They know how to leap!!

Know any schools, students and teachers who would benefit by knowing more about the Cyclebetes Spin-a-Thon Student Leadership Program? Leap! Email me Cheryl@cyclebetes.com.
I’ll send you lots of great info!

Leadership – Are you in?

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

It is through one person having the courage to lead that extraordinary things are accomplished. It always begins the same way, one brave soul steps forward and says. “I’m in!”

Leadership is about having the spirit and desire to make a difference.

Leadership is having a vision sharing it with others.

Leadership is passionately tackling problems knowing a solution is just waiting to be found.

Leadership is taking one step at a time and deciding to keep going with each step.

The Accu-Chek Cyclebetes Spin-a-Thon Student Leadership Program is among the most challenging and satisfying work I’ve done.  I am able to see, hear and experience how lives are changed and transformed in the very best ways. I will share with you an excerpt from a letter from a sponsor teach, “You challenged my students and me to continue to push to fulfill our vision. What we experienced was epic in my life, the lives of my students, the history of our school and community. We are forever changed. We are capable of much more than we thought we were. What a gift. We are truly grateful!”

It doesn’t get much better than that!

Leadership is everyone’s business. We have all said, “Why don’t they do something about this?” The next time you hear yourself say that look in the mirror. Ask again.

Every new project we take on is an opportunity for greatness – for attaining a personal best that further defines us and our own standard of excellence.
