Leadership – Are you in?

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

It is through one person having the courage to lead that extraordinary things are accomplished. It always begins the same way, one brave soul steps forward and says. “I’m in!”

Leadership is about having the spirit and desire to make a difference.

Leadership is having a vision sharing it with others.

Leadership is passionately tackling problems knowing a solution is just waiting to be found.

Leadership is taking one step at a time and deciding to keep going with each step.

The Accu-Chek Cyclebetes Spin-a-Thon Student Leadership Program is among the most challenging and satisfying work I’ve done.  I am able to see, hear and experience how lives are changed and transformed in the very best ways. I will share with you an excerpt from a letter from a sponsor teach, “You challenged my students and me to continue to push to fulfill our vision. What we experienced was epic in my life, the lives of my students, the history of our school and community. We are forever changed. We are capable of much more than we thought we were. What a gift. We are truly grateful!”

It doesn’t get much better than that!

Leadership is everyone’s business. We have all said, “Why don’t they do something about this?” The next time you hear yourself say that look in the mirror. Ask again.

Every new project we take on is an opportunity for greatness – for attaining a personal best that further defines us and our own standard of excellence.

New Weapon in the Battle against Juvenile Diabetes

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

norco-1

Her name is “Dia-Betsy”…  She was custom built Norco Road Tandem – specifically designed to take on the task of delivering on a promise.  Cure Juvenile Diabetes

This mission was not top secret.  It was not one that was meant to be taken lightly.  It was one that would challenge some – pushing them beyond the “norm”!

norco-8

Dia-Betsy will endure almost 10,000kms in her quest.
She would fight through: Hurricane Bill, battered roads, unexpected construction, surprise monsoons, early mornings, late nights, and over 100 legs and feet pushing her further… so far, most people would quite, give up, beg for mercy. But not Dia-Betsy. She begged for more – craved it, it was what she was built to do, it is the only thing she knows – Ride On!

norco-4

Dia-Betsy and the rest of her team will finishing their epic journey this coming weekend with a big welcoming at Lumbermans Park in Stanley Park (Vancouver BC) on Saturday, before making their way to Willows beach in Victoia BC for the final wrap-up on Sunday.  Come out and support the ride.  Maybe even get your picture with Dia-Betsy!

Sharing our ride with the world

Saturday, September 5th, 2009

stockxpertcom_id4714701_size2With twelve days down in the Accu-Chek Cyclebetes Provincial Relay, the journey has been one to remember – we’ve made our way through four of our eight provinces and connect with some really great people both before and after.  However, our ability to connect (and stay connected) has been even easier by the internet, and more specifically social application such as Facebook, Twitter, and Watch My Race.

The Accu-Chek Cyclebetes team has been rocking these social media tools in an attempt to bring thousands and thousands of friends, family, supporters, and interested parties along for the ride… and the response we have had has been remarkable!  These people have not only been able to get a taste of life on the road (updates, pictures, and video), but the ability to send their own messages directly to the team

What’s it like to ride along with the Biggest Bike Relay in the World?  Find out here, here, and here

The Power of Community

Monday, July 27th, 2009

maritimes-community

The raging forest fires that recently wreaked havoc on Kelowna, BC came close to home for a very good friend of mine. She and her young family were evacuated because their home was dangerously close to one of the fires.

We kept in touch via facebook and, after I expressed concern for her, she answered by telling me that they were all ok and that they had an incredible community rallying to support them. My friend had to move her horses twice to avoid the growing danger zone and, each time, friends and strangers came together to help out.

As soon as I read that, my worries were greatly eased. With a strong community supporting her, I knew that she (they) could get through anything.

With a strong community, the unimaginable can be achieved.

Accu-Chek Cyclebetes is the biggest bike relay in the world. Yes, it’s the biggest because of geography, but, in my mind, it is the biggest because of the many different communities we bring together. We have the Type I Community, the Cycling Community, the Education Community, the Health and Wellness Community,  a Community of Champions who want to make a difference in the world…and the list goes on… Each is strong in their own right, but, united, are unstoppable.

If you haven’t experienced a Spin-a-thon yet, then I can’t wait for you to feel the strength and power in the gymnasium. I have literally said, “Man, this disease doesn’t stand a chance!”

If you are reading this, then you are part of the Accu-Chek Cyclebetes Community. We may not know each other (yet), but we want to meet you, or at least see you as we ride by so that we can feel the strength beside us. If you can, please join a community ride, or volunteer to assist at one.

I can’t wait to ride with a group of hundreds joined together to fight.

Something tells me that, once again, I will say, “Man, this disease doesn’t stand a chance!”

A Bit of Inspiration…

Monday, June 15th, 2009

Great job to the Accu-Chek Cyclebetes team last weekend at the Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes in Victoria, British Columbia! Word is really spreading about what we’re doing here and people are signing on for the ride all across the country!!

On another note, I want to share a website that I recently found. Triathlons have become a new passion for me and I found myself googling “Type I Triathletes” out of curiosity. It was that search that led me to Team Type I Triathlon. I had heard about Team Type I and their excellence in the Race Across America (RAAM) but I had no idea that they have a Triathlon team. This amazes and inspires me beyond belief! These people are racing Olympic, 70.3 (1/2 Ironmans) and Ironman distances!! Their Diabetes doesn’t hold them back one bit.

Today, I’m throwing a challenge out there…check out the Team Type I website, get inspired and then join the biggest bike relay in the world…you can do it!!
