Bike Club Hosts Lap-a-thon

Shelley Gartside started the After School Bike Club at Aspen Park School as part of the Cyclebetes program to raise awareness of diabetes and to help raise funds to find a cure for diabetes.

Payton Gartside was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes at 2.5 years. After the initial shock wore off her family swung into gear looking for ways to raise money to find a cure for diabetes.

The Cyclebetes program is new to School District 71 and the parents have told Shelley how much fun the kids are having. After school on Wednesday's the bike club meets in the parking lot and practices riding, braking, turn signals, and talks about nutrition and exercise.

Shelley wanted the kids in the bike club to have a positive role model.

Amanda Wakeling, a junior Bike Cross winner, teaches the kids how to bike safely. Brandon Adama, also a Type 1 diabetic, generously donated his time and checked the kids' bikes to make sure they were safe on the first day of the club.

Adama returned to Aspen Park School on May 4 to perform bike tricks to entertain the kids.

The club culminates in a Lap-a-Thon on May 11 at Aspen Park School and the kids will ride their bikes for an hour to raise money for diabetes.

Prospect Elementary Cyclebetes Lap-a-Thon

It was Wednesday June 3, 2010 when the grade 4 bike club at Prospect Elementary in Saanich, BC took to the track and started counting laps.

The weather didn't cooperate and the Cyclebetes Lap-a-Thon was soggy especially the standing water on the track but it certainly didn't dampen the enthusiasm to ride! There were many rooster tails for moms and dads to wash out.

A number of kids rode their bikes without stopping once during the hour long event. Two friends, Mikey and Tomas from neighbouring Lochside Elementary joined in and rode too. Claremont Secondary pitched in with two tents which kept the gear dry.

The Prospect Elementary Lap-a-Thon raised over $1100 and a great time was had by all!

CONGRATULATIONS Vice Principal/Bike Club Leader Warren Hamm and students at Prospect Elementary!

Elgin Park's Spin-a-Thon was SPECTACULAR

June 2, 2010 was the day - 8am till 8pm - it was year 2 - The Cyclebetes Spin-a-Thon. The Student Leadership team was promising a Spin-a-Thon like no other.

"We want to blow everyone away... we want the participants to have the best time to say WOW that was awesome we can't wait for next year!"

After attending yesterday's event - it was mission accomplished!
It was an OH WOW Spin-a-Thon!

54 teams all themed and costumed - bands - DJ's- a performance artist - a community bbq - prizes galore. Willie Cromack kicked it off along with school trustee Laureen McNally and Elgin Principal Mr. De Boise. Kyle Balango made a special visit in the afternoon and told the story of how the Promise originated.

The 20 student leaders had been meeting weekly since January with sponsor teacher Sue Janzen. The energy of the team was amazing. It was likely modeled after that of their sponsor teacher who is an effervescent, passionate educator who would often start the meeting with...

"Hey rock stars... what do you have to report?" Under her direction they pushed every envelope and went well beyond individual comfort zones! The learning was exceptional - watch for Elgin teacher/student Can do! stories coming up next week.

We applaud Sue Janzen and the 20 member leadership team at Elgin Park and congratulate them on an outstanding success! The event raised over $54,000.00 and every participant left the spin saying, "WOW that was awesome I can't wait for next year!"
